Product Description

The new Olympus E-520 digital single lens reflex (DSLR) camera delivers brilliant images thanks to advanced technologies that help take the blur out. Industry leading Image Stabilization built into the portable camera body compensates for movement so that images are sharp and blur-free with any lens and even at slow shutter speeds. Autofocus Live View brings subjects into sharp focus on the camera’s HyperCrystal II LCD. Together, these technologies produce amazing results, along with the following features that further expand the DSLR experience:
  • In-Body Image Stabilization with Supersonic Wave Drive technology provides blur-free images when using any of the more than 30 digital-specific lenses;
  • Face Detection Technology targets and locks on faces to ensure they are in focus and blur-free for amazing portraits;
  • Shadow Adjustment Technology opens up detail in the shadows that other cameras would render too dark or underexposed while maintaining detail in the highlights; and
  • Perfect Shot Preview enables photographers to view and select White Balance and Exposure Compensation effects right on the LCD, and see how the image will look before they even capture it.

Good camera for new SLR users

Review Date: July 26, 2010
Reviewer: Jennifer Johnson,
The camera itself is very rugid and feels very sturdy. I am very new to SLR photograpghy. The only negative comment I can make is that the options aren't so user friendly, but they will probably come the more I learn about the camera and all the functions. There are so many buttons, just is a little confusing for me right now. The AUTO function seems to produce good pictures most of the time, especially close ups, they come out very well. The AUTO scene selection is nice and has many options for your picture needs. Overall, I am very satisfied with the Olympus E-520. I just need to take the time to learn more about the options and functions. The price compared to Nikons and Canons makes this camera a great deal!! Especially with the two lens kit.
Olympus Evolt E520 10 MP DSLR

The price was reasonable, so I took a chance. My last SLR was a 35mm Nikon. But I was hooked on the compact digitals--great lens quality, good features, low cost, and most important light weight and compact size--they seemed perfect, except for the fact that in bright light, composition is very difficult. I left the Olympus out of travel plans, because the real estate in my backpack was very limited. But at the last minute, i had a change of mind, threw some clothes out of the pack, and threw in the Olympus DSLR, and for two months wandering around India, this DSLR became my best friend. Not crazy about the bulk and weight, but compared to my old Nikon that I lugged around for years, it's an improvement. Shoots raw, provides most of the bells and whistles of the more expensive DSLRs, and gets good battery life.
Average performance for its price range

Reviewer: M. Zimerman,
I am happy with the flash pictures and ruggedness of the camera but find the speed and aperture settings to be less versatile than other cameras I have researched, in the price range. It seems to hold up well to moisture also.
Great SLR Camera

Mi first digital SLR, I am really enjoying it.
Great for begginers, a little slugish when focusing under low light conditions with AF. I bought a Bower external Flash with Focusing Light and this has been fixed.
Good Starter Camera

Review Date: April 16, 2010
Reviewer: Michael Tsai,
For the price I paid, this was an excellent starter camera. I don't believe there was a better deal for me, and i don't regret my choice.

The Kit lenses that come with it are both pretty good, you can try out both lenses and see what kind of range you typically use. Later you can dump them for a better lens. In the past Canon's kit lens were so awful the cheaper olympus kit took better pictures. Today i'm not so sure, however this is still the cheaper kit. Also keep in mind Olympus lenses are generally cheaper than Canon but your lens selection is also much smaller.

Pros:
Photo quality was good. They're a little soft but that's expected, it's a cheapie lens afterall. Photoshop it if you want it to be sharper or cough up the bucks for a 12-60mm lens. Google for unsharp mask if you want to photoshop.
>500 pictures per battery charge. It lasted quite awhile. I came back with thousands of pictures from my vacation, didn't have a problem with just one battery.
Comes with an external battery charger, you don't have to charge your batteries in the camera. So go ahead and buy those cheap generic batteries, if it explodes during charging your camera is safe. Unless it explodes in your camera. But let's hope that doesn't happen, and that you're not holding it.

Cons:
I would have liked to see a higher workable ISO range, ISO800 is about as high as I'll go. If you're just printing on 4x6 this is plenty fine. Keep in mind if you pop on a polarizer you lose light.
I would also have liked to have more options when it came to AES bracketing, it only snaps 3 shots +/- 1EV. Most of us don't need it anyway.

Other stuff to get:
Get a 58mm Hoya Circular Polarizer filter, don't buy Tiffen. It's a waste of money. And don't buy Linear Polarizer just because it's cheaper either, it could mess with autofocus.
Decent tripod, i bought a Dolica because I'm cheap. It's actually pretty good, not too flimsy, the kit lenses aren't heavy enough to make it sink/wobble. Anything better will probably be >$100, if you're willing to spend >$100 for a tripod, spend the money on a newer camera.
Generic infrared remote, great for photos with that cheap Dolica tripod. Best $10 ever.
